For most students, financial aid will be a big part of their college experience. Here is a brief overview of the financial aid process and some important Bright Futures Scholarship reminders.
What exactly is financial aid?
Financial aid is any financial assistance a student receives to assist with paying for school. Typical forms of aid are grants, scholarships, student loans, and Federal Work-Study jobs.
How do I apply for financial aid?
For grants, loans, and work-study jobs, you fill out one form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). However, most scholarships, including Bright Futures, require you to complete separate applications.
When do I apply for financial aid?
We suggest students file their FAFSA as soon as possible to receive the best financial aid package available. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid opens every year on October 1st. **NOTE: If you are starting in Summer, be sure to fill out the FAFSA for the current academic year in addition to the FAFSA for the upcoming academic year.**
Where do I file the FAFSA?
The FAFSA can be found by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is important that you look for the .gov in the address. There are .com websites that are scams, and you want to make sure your information isn’t going to the wrong people.
How do I know what my financial aid package is?
The best way to view your financial aid package is through your myWings account. Follow these steps:
- Log into myWings
- Click the Financial Aid tile
- Select Financial Aid Awards
- Choose the term for which you want to view your financial aid award
How do I make sure UNF knows I have Bright Futures?
You must make sure UNF is listed on your Bright Futures application as the school you plan to attend. The State of Florida will send UNF the information for any student who is eligible for Bright Futures and has listed UNF on their application. You must also make sure your residency for tuition purposes is listed as “Florida Resident.”
Who can I contact if I have questions about my financial aid?

You can also stop by in person, One-Stop Student Services is located in Hicks Hall, building 53.
