Have Fun, Stay Fit!

Written by: Ashley Spiegelhalter

Looking for a fun way to stay active playing a sport you enjoy? UNF offers a great opportunity just for students; intramural sports. By getting involved in intramural sports you are able to stay fit on your own time. You pick the sport, your team, and the time that works best for you, based on the times given to you! Most students who are interested in playing sports don’t, due to the amount of commitment they feel it will require. When you play on an intramural team, you don’t have to feel the pressure of having that daily commitment. Once a week is the minimum you would have to play. You can be on a maximum two teams, either a woman’s or men’s team and/or a co-rec team.

When it comes to sports, there always has to be a winner. After completing a “season”, which is about four once-a-week games, you enter the playoffs based off your team record. The winning team wins an intramural championship t-shirt.  You don’t have to be the best athlete but there is always a team for you! Whether you’re looking to make a team of your own or to make new friends, intramural sports are for you!

With all these great benefits you would think it couldn’t get better, but it does! Intramurals is always looking for referees and it’s a great way to make money. If you don’t know the rules of the sport, the Intramural staff is there to teach you, all you have to do is attend the training sessions. Not only are you working, but it’s for the school which means they are flexible with your schedule.  They will work around your class schedule. If you want to play and ref the same sport, they keep in mind the times you play and won’t schedule you during those times.

As a student having a love for sports and making new friends, I took a hold of this opportunity my freshmen year and I’ve been involved in intramurals ever since. I immediately made friends with people who had the same love for volleyball as I did and we formed a team. Although we never did win the “prized” championship t-shirt, I still had a great experience.  Who said in the upcoming years it won’t happen?  This year, being a sophomore, and now in need of some extra money, I started refereeing volleyball. I had nothing to lose; I mean, I know the sport like the back of my hand. I had a wonderful experience working with the intramural staff; they were flexible with my schedule and were always there when I needed help or had questions!

I would definitely recommend intramurals to any incoming freshmen looking to stay fit, make new friends, or having a great time! With all these great reasons to join, why not give it a shot? Believe me, it’s a decision you won’t regret!
